Nana Kwadwo Agyei Yeboah, popularly known as Nana Kay, a communication team member and election directorate member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged the Electoral Commissioner (EC), Jean Adukwei Mensa, to allow her Christian principles to guide her decision-making regarding the controversies surrounding the disputed Ablekuma North constituency parliamentary election.
He asserts that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has intimidated and manipulated the EC into calling for a rerun in 19 polling stations, despite the EC informing Parliament in June that a rerun would be a last resort.
In June this year, the EC appeared in Parliament and had initially ruled out a re-run of the 2024 parliamentary election in the Ablekuma North constituency in the Greater Accra Region, stating that results from only three outstanding polling stations were yet to be collated.
Responding to questions on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, June 19, 2025, the EC’s Deputy Chairperson in charge of Corporate Services, Dr Bossman Asare, declared that a rerun remains a measure of last resort.
“So, for Ablekuma North, we have not reached the point where we will say we don’t have the results. When we try and we cannot get the results, that is when we will resort to the rerun. The rerun will be a last option,” Dr Asare said.
However, the EC issued a statement on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, announcing it would rerun the election in 19 polling stations.
Nana Kay, reacting to this, accused the EC of allowing the ruling NDC to coerce it into organising “free polls” (it seems you meant “fresh polls” or “new elections” here, or perhaps “unfair polls”).
‘’The EC had gone to Parliament and told the parliamentarians that only three polling stations were outstanding, and a rerun was not an option. So where did the other 16 polling stations come from? I want to tell Jean Mensa that she is a Christian, and so she should allow her Christian values and principles to lead her in taking firm and unbiased decisions regarding Ablekuma North. The second issue is that she should be reminded that when the NPP was in power, the police looked on unconcerned as violence marred the Ablekuma North parliamentary polls. The former IGP George Akuffo Dampare did nothing, thinking he would be maintained by the new government; little did he know that they were going to sack him. Jean Mensa should be truthful and not allow the NDC to intimidate her. If they want to sack her, she should make sure she leaves the EC with her integrity and dignity intact. She is trying to please the government, but she could be sacked in a disgraceful manner. I encourage her to remain courageous and tell Ghanaians the truth. When she was calling on the police to provide protection so they could declare the results, was a rerun part of the plan? When the EC went to Parliament and declared that only three polling stations were outstanding, was a rerun part of the discussion? Besides, the EC has no such powers to declare a rerun unless a competent court of jurisdiction orders it. So, we will challenge this decision in court.’’
