The government has deployed the Ghana Armed Forces to Bawku and surrounding areas to enforce peace and maintain law and order.
The deployment, according to the presidency, follows a recent escalation of violence linked to a chieftaincy conflict.
A statement issued by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, government spokesperson, stated that this is to ensure that the peace-building efforts are not derailed.
“The Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed to maintain law and order, as we intensify curfews to ensure public safety,” stated Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP, Spokesperson to the President, and Minister of Government Communications. He further assured the public that the “Ghana Armed Forces will take all necessary measures to protect lives and property.”
The government commended His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his mediation efforts, which had brought “finality to the conflict until the very recent killings, which have necessitated drastic actions to protect all in the interests of the greater good.”
According to the statement, although the use of the military is regretted, it was important to restore peace and stability.
“While regretting the inconvenience this peace enforcement intervention may cause to peace-loving people within the affected areas, the Government of Ghana remains committed to restoring peace and stability in Bawku and other affected areas,” Ofosu added.
He said the government is “taking every necessary measure to ensure the safety and security of all residents, including students.”
Authorities are urging all parties involved to “refrain from violence and support the peace process,” advising residents to “fully cooperate with the Ghana Armed Forces to ensure peace.”
