The Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources has announced its readiness to finish critical drainage projects in the Trobo area as soon as the Ministry of Finance authorises the required funding.
Addressing parliamentary anxieties, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, explained that regular flooding across Trobo and its environs, particularly near the Achimota-Ofankor Highway, poses a severe risk to lives, property, businesses and vital infrastructure.
“The persistent flooding at the Ofankor barrier is primarily due to structures constructed directly on major storm water drains obstructing the natural flow of water,” the Minister stated.
Hon. Adjei noted that the Ghana Hydrological Authority [GHA], through the Greater Accra Drainage Planning Studies, has pinpointed specific measures to boost drainage performance.
Under the umbrella of the 2023 National Flood Control Programme, the GHA built roughly 150 metres of the lower section of the Spot M drainage channel to facilitate water movement and mitigate flooding further upstream.
Nonetheless, the Minister pointed out that the entire stretch in need of restoration spans more than 2.1 kilometres. The remaining parts, he clarified, “still need comprehensive upgrading including widening, lining and capacity enhancement.”
“My ministry stands ready to complete the outstanding works once the necessary financial commitment and approval are secured from the Ministry of Finance. This will significantly improve drainage within the Trobo catchment and reduce the frequency and severity of flooding,” Hon. Adjei told Parliament.
