The Presidency has announced the immediate removal of Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo, from office.
Her removal from office was effected by President John Dramani Mahama, in accordance with the provisions of Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution.
This was contained in a statement issued by the presidency.
The official communication was signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu (MP), the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.
The removal follows the President’s receipt of the report from a Committee constituted under Article 146(6) to investigate petitions submitted by some Ghanaian citizens.
The Committee, after a thorough review of the petition and evidence, concluded that the grounds of ‘stated misbehaviour’ under Article 146(1) had been established. Consequently, the Committee recommended her removal from office.
According to Article 146(9) of the Constitution, the President is mandated to act in accordance with the Committee’s recommendation.
