The Suhum Government Hospital project remains at a standstill because the 2025 budget contains no financial provisions for it, according to Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

Addressing parliamentarians, Hon. Akandoh explained that the previous administration initiated the project but spent “not a dime” on it during their tenure.

He confirmed that the current 2025 fiscal plan completely omits funding for the facility, stating, “When asked what budget was allocated, the truth is there is no allocation.”

To remedy this, the Ministry of Health has formally asked the Ministry of Finance to include the hospital in the 2025 mid-year budget review. Should that attempt fail, the Minister noted that the government aims to feature the project in the primary 2026 budget.

Hon. Akandoh also credited a private entrepreneur for starting work on the hospital’s emergency department, remarking, “If not for him, nothing would have started there.”

The overall project has struggled significantly since its inception. While the government signed an official contract in 2018, it failed to secure a supporting loan facility. Consequently, workers have finished only roughly 6% of the construction.

Despite these setbacks, the Health Minister maintained that his ministry intends to complete the construction as soon as they obtain the necessary funds, recognising that Suhum and its neighboring areas desperately require the facility to upgrade local medical access.

The prolonged delay continues to spark worry in Parliament, where various lawmakers representing Eastern Region residents have repeatedly questioned why the critical infrastructure remains frozen
