Thirteen suspected drug peddlers, including a 22-year-old National Service personnel, have been arrested in Kumasi following a series of intelligence-led sweeps by the Ghana Police Service.

The targeted crackdown, executed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team in collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Police Command, led to the recovery of vast quantities of narcotics across several key locations within the metropolis.

The operations focused on specific hubs identified as major distribution networks for illicit substances.

In Asawase, officers apprehended 61-year-old Kwame Afriyie, alias “Con Papa” or “American Man”, who authorities believe is a notorious local drug dealer.

A thorough search of his residence and provision shop uncovered a massive haul of compressed cannabis, yielding 33 and 48 parcels from the respective locations.

In a separate raid in Asafo, police detained Kofi Acheampong, known locally as “Mokobiley”.

Investigators searching his property discovered 311 transparent rubber sachets and 13 compressed parcels of dried leaves suspected to be narcotics, alongside ten brown paper wraps of a black rock-like substance and restricted pharmaceutical products.

Meanwhile, a raid in Krofrom resulted in the arrest of Michael Owusu Agyeman, a National Service personnel, who was found in possession of 15 bottles of fruit juice allegedly laced with cannabis.

Further sweeps across neighbourhoods including Atonsu-Bokuro, Kenyase, Asokwa, Buokrom, and Asafo BB resulted in ten additional arrests, with suspects’ ages ranging from 23 to 47.

Additionally, the police seized a variety of highly controlled substances, including tramadol, ecstasy, amphetamine tablets, and suspected cocaine.

All 13 suspects have been arraigned before court and remanded into police custody, while the seized items have been secured for forensic testing.

Commenting on the success of the raids, Deputy Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyo praised the coordination between the specialised units for their professionalism and relentless efforts in disrupting criminal networks.

In an official statement, the police regional headquarters reiterated its commitment to the cause, stating that the Ghana Police Service “urges the public to continue supporting law enforcement efforts by providing credible information on drug-related activities” to ensure public safety.
