Graduates from unaccredited institutions cannot do National Service – Education Minister

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and the Ministry of Education have reaffirmed that individuals graduating from unaccredited tertiary institutions are barred from registering for national service.

While addressing Parliament, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu explained that GTEC, established under the Education Regulatory Bodies Act of 2023, serves as the exclusive agency managing all higher education institutions across the country.

He noted that the commission is tasked with regulating these bodies, guaranteeing quality, and developing a world-class tertiary system tailored to both domestic requirements and international standards.

“Mr speaker the students who graduate from unaccredited institutions are not allowed to do national service according to GTEC and the national service authority,” he stated.

The Minister further noted that the Ministry has subsequently addressed the problem via GTEC by ensuring that the affected institutions obtain proper accreditation, thereby enabling their alumni to join the national scheme.

“So simply Mr Speaker at a time that GTEC declared them unaccredited institutions we could not give legitimacy to their students during national service. Once you are not accredited you are not accredited. We must ensure fidelity and respect to the laws of Ghana,” he added.
