A major intelligence-led operation across multiple communities in the Ashanti Region has resulted in the arrest of 24 suspects and the seizure of an unregistered stockpile of vehicles, weapons, and narcotics.

The exercise, executed by the Inspector-General of Police Special Operations Team in collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Police Command, targeted suspected drug peddlers and criminal elements operating within Kodie, Apagya, Dechemso, Old Tafo Ahenbronum, Ahodwo, and Abofour.

The sweep led to the apprehension of 21 men and three women. Among those detained is 49-year-old Richmond Okyere, who was found in possession of an unregistered pump-action shotgun.

In a statement confirming the development, Deputy Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Public Affairs Unit for the Ashanti Region, said: “The operation specifically targeted suspected drug peddlers, disrupted criminal activities, and led to the apprehension of other suspected criminal elements operating within the affected communities”.

Police retrieved a significant cache of illicit items during the raids, including a Toyota Highlander, a Toyota Camry, a Mercedes-Benz, and an unregistered motorcycle.

Officers also recovered the pump-action shotgun, seven rounds of ammunition, a high-security safe, and a substantial quantity of suspected narcotics, including 489 pieces of cannabis leaves, hundreds of Tramadol tablets, and over three dozen material packs used in processing drugs.

“All the suspects are currently in Police custody assisting with investigations, while the exhibits retrieved have been retained for evidential purposes,” DSP Ahianyo added. “Upon the conclusion of investigations, suspects found culpable will be put before the court”.

The regional command has reiterated its commitment to sustained anti-crime operations to ensure public safety, while urging local residents to continue assisting law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities through designated emergency channels.
