The government has declared a two-day national cleaning exercise across seven flood-hit regions following devastating seasonal rains (19853.jpg).

The initiative, organized under the auspices of the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee, will take place on Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026 (19853.jpg). Operating under the theme “Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the floods,” the exercise aims to secure local environments and safeguard lives by clearing critical infrastructure.

Presidential appointees, including Ministers of State, Members of Parliament, and heads of public institutions, have been ordered to leave their offices to lead the cleanup alongside local communities.

The exercise will roll out in phases. On Friday, personnel from the security agencies, waste management companies, and local government assemblies will begin the initial cleanup.

The general public is expected to join these teams on Saturday to scale up the efforts.

Work will focus heavily on desilting choked drainage systems to ensure free water flow before further heavy rainfall, sweeping major highways, and clearing waste from public spaces such as markets and lorry parks.

In an official statement, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP and Spokesperson to the President, described the intervention as a vital wake-up call for the country.

“For far too long, indiscriminate littering and plastic pollution have clogged our drainage systems, contributing to devastating, preventable floods that destroy livelihoods and claim precious Ghanaian lives,” Mr Ofosu said.

Local government authorities and Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) have been directed to partner with waste management firms to provide logistics, including trucks, gloves, and shovels.

Officials have also been instructed to evacuate all gathered silt and refuse immediately to prevent waste from washing back into the drainage systems.

“Let us rise together and show that the Ghanaian spirit of community, discipline, and unity is alive and well,” Mr Ofosu added. “Protect your home, protect your neighbour, and let us clean our beloved homeland.”
