The Government of Ghana has formally announced a series of commemorative activities scheduled to begin on Thursday, 30 July 2026.
The events will mark the first anniversary of the tragic military helicopter crash on 6 August 2025, which claimed the lives of eight distinguished national patriots in the Ashanti Region.
The upcoming week-long programme aims to honour the memory, selfless service, and sacrifice of the departed patriots while offering sustained support to their bereaved families.
Among the high-profile casualties of the crash were Defence Minister Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, and NDC Vice Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong, alongside former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye and three Ghana Air Force crew members.
Outlining the sequence of events, government officials confirmed that the commemorative schedule will feature the presentation of official Government support packages to the families of the fallen heroes, followed by the inaugurating edition of the Dr Edward Omane Boamah Memorial Lecture.
The national activities will also include a National Inter-Faith Memorial Service, the official unveiling of a permanent memorial cenotaph to honour the eight victims, and the nationwide ‘Service to the Soul’ Blood Donation Drive aimed at giving back to the health sector.
Speaking on the solemn upcoming anniversary, government underscored the need for national solidarity and quiet reflection across all sectors of society.
“The government invites the general public, civil society organisations, religious bodies, media organisations, and all well-wishers to participate in these commemorative activities and join the nation in paying tribute to the Departed Eight through prayer, remembrance, and acts of service,” the statement read.
Reflecting on the enduring legacy of the fallen public officers and military personnel, the spokesperson urged citizens to channel the tragic loss into a renewed dedication to the country.
“Together, let us honour their legacy and reaffirm our commitment to the values of patriotism, duty, and national service,” the statement added.
Members of the public across the country’s sixteen regions are expected to participate in the various designated events, with further logistical details regarding local blood donation centers and memorial broadcast coverage to be released in the coming days.
