Afenyo-Markin warns NDC Majority against Arrogance, cites US Midterm results

Ghana’s Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has sounded a strong note of caution to the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) side in Parliament, urging them not to be blinded by their numerical strength in the House.

Drawing sharp parallels with international political developments, the Effutu lawmaker pointed to the recent outcomes of the United States midterm elections as a stark reminder of how quickly political fortunes can shift when those in power misread their mandates.

Speaking during a press engagement in Parliament, Afenyo-Markin highlighted how American voters decisively stripped the Republican Party of its majorities across both the Senate and the House of Representatives—just two years after handing them firm control of Congress.

“Just yesterday, ladies and gentlemen of the press, in the United States midterm elections, American voters stripped the Republican party of its majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Only two years after handing it control of both chambers of Congress,” he stated.

He underscored that the swift political reversal in the US serves as a sobering lesson for any governing caucus that assumes its parliamentary dominance is absolute.

“It is a powerful reminder to every majority, particularly the NDC majority here in our Parliament. The people who give you power can take it away,” he said.

The Minority Leader further cautioned that overwhelming electoral victories must never be interpreted as permission to undermine parliamentary oversight or ride roughshod over constitutional boundaries. According to him, large majorities demand even greater adherence to democratic norms and accountability.

“That is why we should never forget that an electoral mandate however generous confers the responsibility to govern within constitutional limits. It grants no license to suffocate scrutiny and when those limits are tested, the Speaker will respectfully submit, must remain a bastion of balance and fairness,” Afenyo-Markin added.

His comments come amid ongoing debates in the House regarding parliamentary conduct, consensus-building, and the critical role of the Speaker in maintaining equilibrium between the Majority and Minority benches.
