The Director-General of Prisons, Mrs Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq.), has paid a courtesy call on the Vice-President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, at the Jubilee House in Accra.
The visit afforded the Director-General an opportunity to express appreciation to the Vice-President for her continued interest in and support for the Ghana Prisons Service, particularly her role as the Reviewing Officer at the recent graduation parade of Cadet Course Intakes 33, 34, and 35 at the Premier Centre for Prisons and Correctional Innovation (PCPCI) at Fumso in the Ashanti Region.
Mrs Baffoe-Bonnie commended the Vice-President for backing the Service’s transformational initiatives, highlighting the Medicine and Equipment Bank project. The project has secured medical supplies from pharmaceutical companies and is currently benefiting several regions.
She disclosed plans to establish a water factory at Ankaful in the Central Region to supply the surrounding community while equipping inmates with practical skills to aid their rehabilitation and reintegration.
The Director-General further drew attention to pressing operational challenges, specifically the deteriorated road network leading to Ankaful, which houses the Ankaful Maximum Security Prison alongside three other prison facilities.
In her response, the Vice-President commended the Director-General for demonstrating commitment to the Affirmative Action Act through the gender-balanced composition of her delegation.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang pledged the government’s continued support for the Ghana Prisons Service to boost institutional capacity, improve inmate welfare, and strengthen rehabilitation programmes.
The Director-General was accompanied by DOP Francis Selorm Hagbe (Services and Prison Business), DOP Millicent Owusu (Welfare and Inmates Treatment), DOP Edward Ashun (Greater Accra Regional Commander), and DDP Charles Ameyaw (Chief Legal Officer).
