The General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) is demanding proper account from the government on its flagship agricultural policies especially the planting for food and jobs.
Edward Kareweh, the Secretary for the General Agricultural Workers Union, speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5 Fm, said the policy is laudable but we need a detailed account of the successes chalked.
He explained that the government must evaluate the planting for food and job policy and tell Ghanaians where are at the moment.
“It is important for the government from time to time to evaluate policies that will be implemented and particularly policies attract a lot of spending on them. The planting for food and jobs programme started in 2017 and has a clear mandate or objective to deliver. The objective is to produce enough food for Ghanaians and feed the industry and if possible, where there is excess, the excess can be exported.
We need to ask ourselves we have enough food in the country. Are we planting enough? Do we have enough rice, maize, tomato in the country? If the answer is another we need to find out the reason why.”
He said the Minister had told Ghanaians we were going to have a bumper harvest this season but it seems we do not have a bumper harvest.
The delivery of the policy he maintained has been poor.
He also emphasized how prices are going high and that if care is not taken somewhere next year, there would be a serious shortage of food especially if there is a low level of production.
He added that Ghana os currently importing fertilizer with the Ministry looking helpless.
