A research conducted by the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has revealed that 48 percent of traffic lights in the Greater Accra Region are non-functional.
The findings by the NRSA disclosed that some of the areas where the non-function lights were discovered were Okponglo Junction, Shangrila, Kaneshie first light, Mataheko, Odorkor-Hansonic Junction, Kasoa-Tetegu junction.

For the Ashanti Region, it was discovered that 19% of traffic lights are not functioning, whereas in the Central and Western Regions it was discovered that 9% and 7% respectively were not functioning.
According to the NRSA, the issue “increases the vulnerability of road users, especially pedestrians, to road traffic crashes and their associated injuries and deaths.”
The statement issued by the NRSA said the government’s failure to fix these faulty and non-functional streetlights and traffic signals “undermine the intent for their installation.”
It has therefore asked the Department of Urban Roads, relevant assemblies, and the Ministry of Energy to take steps to ensure the functionality of streetlights and traffic signals.
“The Authority may be compelled to exercise its mandate to enforce the standards against erring duty bearers should the irresponsibility persist,” a portion of the statement said.
