Governance expert Mr. Amon Kotey Issah has noted that the failure by the Nana Addo-led administration to review the free senior high school policy is hurting Ghana’s fragile economy.
He said the decision not to review the free is a political decision, which the current government is embarking on, so it does not appear that the president who introduced the policy is reviewing it.
The governance expert stated on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta had advised the government not to implement the policy in a blanket manner, but his advice was ignored.
”The Finance Minister advised that we review the policy. Why do you think he said that? I mean, he doesn’t feel okay that his children should go to SHS for free. What does that tell you?”
“Why should someone whose child attended an international school and paid exorbitant fees be eligible for free SHS? This is an imbalance, and you are putting strain on the system. Those who have enough and are able to pay must be considered and balanced.
Some do not have the financial means to pay, but because they are among those who can, we can allow them to do so.

“Something has to be done.” All I see is Nana attempting to manage it and push the policy until the end of his term so that when a new person takes over, he or she is blamed for a review. So, even if it hurts the economy, they don’t care, which is a bad situation,” he told host Kwabena Agyapong.
”It is not healthy because you are weakening the economy,” he stressed.
Another complaint he had was that the NPP had shouted about sole sourcing and accused the Mahama administration of doing so, but today, sole sourcing is being practised under the NPP, and it has even tripled, and when you do that, people will be disappointed and lose hope in the system.
