The Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament has called for a thorough investigation into the re-arrest of Chinese illegal mining queen Aisha Huang, who has changed her name to Huang En.
The Committee has stated that it will closely monitor the situation and ensure that the suspect is dealt with.
The Chairman of the Committee, Samuel Atta Akyea, stated that the issue must be handled according to Ghanaian law.
According to the Abuakwa South MP, we appear to talk more but fail to enforce our laws.
He disclosed that the committee will monitor this matter “because at the end of the day, maybe our talking is so strong but our doing is too little that is why anybody can come into this country and believes that in Ghana you can even divert a river in the name of commerce and make my money with the support of chiefs and all manner of institutions…We can’t run a country like that”.
He emphasised the importance of investigating so that Aisha Huang and her associates can be prosecuted.
He quizzed, through what means did she come back? Those who facilitated her entry into Ghana after her deportation should be sanctioned by the law.
“I pray to God that she is treated in stricter terms so that she would not slip through our fingers.”
Meanwhile, the Office of the Attorney General has announced that the suspect would be spared.
According to the AG Department, Ms. Huang will stand for trial for her past and current crime.
In a post on social media, the Attorney General and the Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah said he has called for the docket on Aisha Huang for prosecution.
“Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has called for the docket on En Huang, a.k.a. Aisha Huang, from the Police,” portions of the Ministry’s post on September 6 read.
“The Attorney General per his request, assures that he will initiate prosecution against Miss Huang, in respect of her current alleged offences as well as those of 2017 before her deportation from Ghana in 2018,” he added.
Aisha Huang remanded
An Accra Circuit Court has remanded Aisha Huang into police custody for illegal mining.
This was after she and three others were re-arrested for their roles in the crime.
They have been charged with illegal mining and the sale and purchase of minerals. They are scheduled to appear in court again on September 14, 2022.
They all entered not guilty pleas to all charges.
