The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has disclosed that the country has recorded over 4,600+cases of fire outbreaks between January 2022 and September 2022.
The GNFS says the figure compared to the same period in 2021 shows that the outbreaks have increased sharply.
ACFO1 Timothy Affum, the Service’s public relations officer, stated that the increase in outbreaks is normal due to our development and migration of people from both inside and outside the country.
He also stated that the majority of the outbreaks recorded by the GNFS were from slums across the country.
As a result, the GNFS has launched an exercise to help reduce outbreaks in our slums, he added.
To the general public, he advised them to strictly adhere to fire safety principles at home and at work to help prevent accidental fires.
He explained that many of the fires recorded could have been avoided if people had followed basic safety precautions when using electricity and naked fire.
Again, he urged all to switch off all electrical appliances when leaving their homes and workplaces.
“Ensure that when leaving home, all electrical gadgets such as TVs, Radio Sets, and Home Theatres are switched off and unplugged from the socket,” he stated.
In regards to the handling of naked light, he stated that proper precautions must be taken. Candles, mosquito coils, and lanterns should not be left unattended, particularly during this time of year.
In order to avoid an accident or fire outbreak, he urged parents not to allow their children to play with naked fire.
