Former Deputy General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), lawyer Obiri Boahen says the Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey had no business leading the demolition exercise at the Ramsar Site.
The lawyer said the site belonged to the Forestry Commission, a legal entity which can sue and, also be sued, hence it was within the mandate of the Commission ro lawfully demolish the buildings and not the Minister.
”Why should the regional minister be the one to lead the demolition? The Forestry Commission is a legal entity,. It can sue and be sued. If you are to demolish at the Ramsar site, why should REGSEC lead the demolition exercise?”
The Greater Accra Regional Security Council on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, started to demolish all unlawfully erected structures in the core zone of the Sakumo Ramsar Site.
The demolition exercise started after a series of announcements by the government for persons erecting buildings on the site to desist from the act to help preserve the ecological state of the Ramsar Site.
But lawyer Obiri Boahen says the Forestry Commission could have led the demolition without the involvement of the Regional Minister.
”When I heard Henry Quartey lead the campaign, I asked myself, why should he lead the demolition exercise? The Forestry Commission is a legal entity. It can sue and be sued. So why should the Regional Minister lead the demolition exercise/”.
