The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has stated that it is currently working to resolve the current state of transport fare increment without approval from the mother body.
The GPRTU approved a 19 per cent increment as announced but the Concerned Drivers Association members pegged their increment at 30 per cent.
Later the drivers under the GPRTU increased their fares by an additional 4 to 5 per cent.
The situation triggered agitation between drivers and their mates on one hand and passengers on the other hand.
Reacting to the issue, Public Relations Officer for GPRTU, Abass Imoro said the situation was something they are currently dealing with.
He said while negotiations were ongoing for the 19 per cent increment, some driver unions had already increased their fares.
He said just before that, the price of petrol and diesel went up twice.
“The drivers complained and did not accept the 19 per cent but had to agree out of respect. Before implementing the 19 per cent, the fuel prices went up again. That is what brought about the situation. The transport unions are also more compared to the past. We will try our best and resolve the situation. What has happened in the transport sector is unprecedented? We will meet with the drivers and find a solution,” he added.
