Lawyers for investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas have denied media reports that the journalist has been ordered by the Supreme Court to testify as a witness in the Number 12 saga in an open court.
The apex court is to have ordered the investigative journalist to appear in open Court to face the former President of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantakyi.
The High Court had granted an oral application by the prosecution in the criminal case of Kwesi Nyantakyi for Anas Aremeyaw Anas to give evidence in-camera as a prosecution witness.
However, lawyers of Kwesi Nyantakyi challenged the ruling and filed a certiorari application at the Supreme Court.
In their application, the lawyers, led by Thadeus Sory, argued that the order of the High Court offended the human rights of the applicant as guaranteed under the 1992 Constitution.
They also argued that the order was made without regard to the procedures and rules of the court which required that a formal and not an oral application be made in such circumstances.
But lawyers for Anas, Cromwell Gray said the media reports were false.
It has asked the public to disregard it.
The lawyers explained that the late Ahmed Suale who was the key witness in the case was murdered and Anas agreed to step in as the key witness.
However, he only agreed to be used as a witness if he is granted the privilege to testify in-camera.
It added that Anas may choose to testify as a prosecution witness or not and that he and his team, would continue to wear their iconic face beads as a symbol of impartial anonymity in investigative journalism and to highlight the extreme risks associated with their work.
