Otto Addo, Ghana’s senior national team coach, has explained why he chose the squad he did to defend the country at the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
Addressing journalists at the squad’s unveiling, the coach denied claims that he was influenced or that the GFA interfered with the selection process.
The coach stated that such rumours were false and that the decision to select players was solely his, even though he did so with the assistance of the technical team.
He said that as a team, strong values are required to make the team strong, and the selection criteria were based both on and off the pitch.
On the field, he stated that the critical criteria were the players’ willingness and readiness to play for the national team when called upon.
Coach Addo also expected the players to be trustworthy and not reveal issues discussed within the team, and to be kept in the team.
He went on to say that his key performance indicator was the players’ performance, values, and willingness to sacrifice for the team.
He also stated that he desired a well-balanced team and that the selection was not an easy one.
He apologized to those who were unable to make the call due to injuries and those who were affected by his personal decision.
