As part of efforts to take advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the UNDP is set to give a grant of GHC50,000 each to some 18 Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
The initiative will support the youth and women selected from five districts and municipalities in Ghana including Kumasi, Jomoro, Kassena Nankana, and Savelugu.
Sylvia Sefakor Senu, an economic analyst with UNDP, told journalists on the sidelines of the training workshop that “the support actually is an integrated support we’re offering, it dates back to when COVID started.”
“We started looking at COVID recovery plans,” she said. “What it meant was that the assembly needed to factor in diseases and interruptions such as COVID in their planning so that when it happens, they’re not totally thrown off.”
Fareed Kwesi Arthur, AfCFTA’s national coordinator, encouraged youth and traders to take advantage of the AfCFTA initiative.
Arthur also encouraged young people in SMEs to consider collaboration or mergers to help their businesses grow.
For his part, Ketu South municipal coordinating director, Gilbert Enyonam Avemegah called on the youth to “identify chances in economic crisis” and desist from “complaining about it”.
