Former President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated that he will use only sixty ministers to run his government should he be elected the president of Ghana.
He said the current government has ruined the country by running with over eighty-six ministers and their deputies which is expensive for the nation.
Former President Mahama made the promise while commenting on President Akufo-recent Addo’s appointments in the Western Region’s Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira Constituency.
The trip is part of his campaign to lead the National Democracy Congress (NDC) in the 2024 elections.
The Akufo-Addo government recently appointed Kobina Tahir Hammond as Minister of Trade and Industry, Bryan Acheampong as Minister of Food and Agriculture, Stephen Asamoah Boateng as Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mohammed Amin Adam as Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, Osei Bonsu Amoah as Minister of State at the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, and Dr. Stephan Amoah as Deputy Trade Minister.
The NDC’s primaries for both flagbearers and the parliamentary candidates would be held on Saturday, May 13, 2023, across all 275 constituencies in the country.
“Looking at how the government has ruined the country, when NDC comes, we shall manage the country not more than sixty ministers in order to reduce government expenditure,” Mr. Mahama said in Twi.
He added that excessive tripe by government appointees with an expensive budget would be curtailed because the government must be lenient with the people of Ghana.
The Member of Parliament for Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira Constituency, Kofi Arko Nokoe recounted how difficult it was for him to wrestle the seat from the then New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP, Catherine Abelema Afeku, who was then a Cabinet Minister.
He said he suffered to wrestle the seat so they are willing to do everything to retain the seat in the 2024 elections.
This is a seat which is very difficult to win but in 2020, we wrestled it from the NPP. In 2016 after the election, the NDC power went down in the constituency. In 2018, I went to the party and told them I could wrestle it because everyone was afraid of the then-NPP MP. I went round the constituency and I realized Axim was the challenge so if we can break that challenge, we shall win the seat”, Mr. Nokoe recounted.
