Voting has officially ended in the Assin North by-election in the Central Region.
Sorting of the ballots and counting is currently underway in several of the polling stations in the constituency.
Over 40,000 voters are expected to vote in the by-election today, Tuesday, June 27, to decide their next representative in Parliament.
The seat is being contested by three candidates: James Gyakye Quayson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG).
Following the annulment of Mr. Quayson’s 2020 parliamentary election, the Electoral Commission (EC) set the by-election for June 27.
The three candidates have all expressed confidence in their chances of winning the contest.
Over the weekend, the two major parties, the NDC and the NPP, wrapped up their campaign operations.
President Akufo-Addo urged citizens not to vote for someone who could end up in prison.
He also denied interfering with the pending legal proceedings concerning James Gyakte Quayson.
Former President John Dramani Mahama, on his part, has promised to make the NDC candidate a minister if he is re-elected president in 2024.
He accused the NPP of engaging in vote-buying methods.
He bemoaned the NPP’s use of stolen state funds to purchase and give products in exchange for votes.
He advised the citizens to accept the items but vote against the NPP.
