John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress, has expressed concerns about the unprecedented corruption cases under the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The former president emphasized the increasing corruption allegations in Ghana, stating that citizens have become accustomed to these scandals under the Akufo-Addo government.
He stated that Ghanaians are no longer surprised when scandals and cases of corruption emerge since this government has made them normal.
He made the remarks while commenting on the revenue assurance contract between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) Ghana.
He pledges to hold SML accountable for all contracts received if elected to form Ghana’s next government.
“An NDC government under me (John Mahama) will not recognise or accept this SML agreement,” he said in a speech in Koforidua at the start of a tour of the Eastern Region.
“Parliament is investigating it. The president has hurriedly gone to get KPMG to come and audit it. Whatever audit they do, I say we won’t accept or respect any agreement with SML. And for the money that they have taken already, we will hold them to account for that money,” he added.
After the assurance, the candidate then slammed the government stressing that they had failed the corruption fight.
Mahama spoke during a meeting with organised labour as part of the “Building Ghana Tour” in the Eastern Region on January 31, 2024.
“You cannot fleece a country like this,” he said. “One would have thought that the corruption cases were enough but it’s even made Ghanaians numb. Now Ghanaians are not surprised again. Corruption does not shock Ghanaians the way it used to shock us…Even in the twilight when you are exiting office, you are still coming up with schemes to steal Ghanaians’ money.”
And this is at a time when we have the office of special prosecutor. I know why it was established. It was established to go after political opponents. Unfortunately, the Special Prosecutor is investigating everybody, and now that he is biting their own people,” they are frustrating him.
