Civil advocacy group, AriseGhana has served notice it will organise a demonstration should President Akufo-Addo fail to assent to the anti-LGBTQI+ Bill.
According to the group, the president had not demonstrated his preparedness to assent to the Human Rights and Family Values Bill recently passed by the Parliament of Ghana.
A statement issued by the group on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, questioned why the President has refused to ascent I to the bill on grounds of a case pending at the Supreme Court.
They have also asked the president to uphold core national values and the need to address the LGBTQI+ issue.
The group also believes the claim that Ghana will suffer financial implications over the bill was unfortunate.
It said this position taken by the government shows the management of significant revenues and loans obtained during the government’s tenure has been poorly done.
Parliament on February 28, 2024, passed the anti-gay bill criminalising their promotion, advocacy, and funding.
Persons found guilty would face a jail term of 6 months to 3 years, while promoters and sponsors of the act could face a 3 to 5-year jail term.
