The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammy Awuku, has weighed in on the raging controversy surrounding reported $22 billion losses linked to Goldbod and Bank of Ghana gold trade transactions.

In an official statement, the lawmaker urged political actors to avoid reducing the grave economic matter to routine partisan rhetoric and focus on delivering clear, factual accountability to Ghanaians.

Acknowledging the concerns raised by the Minority regarding whether the reported losses stemmed from independent operational decisions or institutional collusion, Awuku noted that the gravity of the figures—which featured in official International Monetary Fund (IMF) reports—demands serious attention.

“The Minority has raised important questions about the losses reportedly incurred by the Goldbod and Bank of Ghana on the gold trade transactions and operations,” Awuku stated. “These are matters that cannot simply be swept under the carpet or resolved through propaganda, political rhetoric, or attempts to shift the conversation away from the substance of the issues.”

He stressed that the appropriate response from the authorities is to provide credible evidence to counter any inaccuracies in the IMF data, rather than launching political attacks or attempting to discredit those asking questions.

Awuku also called on the media to maintain objective scrutiny instead of focusing on undermining critics. Reaffirming his alignment with Parliamentary leadership, he maintained that the primary focus must remain on transparency, facts, and the overarching national interest.

On this issue of the Goldbod, the $22 billion losses and the concerns raised by the Minority, I believe we must resist the temptation to reduce what are very serious matters to the usual political back and forth.

The Minority has raised important questions about the losses reportedly incurred by the Goldbod and Bank of Ghana on the gold trade transactions and operations, whether these arose from actions taken independently or in collusion. These are matters that cannot simply be swept under the carpet or resolved through propaganda, political rhetoric, or attempts to shift the conversation away from the substance of the issues.

The figures being discussed have been captured in official reports of the IMF and therefore, the right response is not to attack the Minority or turn the matter into a political football, but to provide clear, credible answers. The media also has a responsibility to interrogate the issues objectively rather than focusing primarily on discrediting those who have raised the concerns.

At the end of the day, this is about getting answers and doing what is right for the country. If the figures or conclusions attributed to the IMF are inaccurate, then the government should provide the evidence and give Ghanaians the appropriate counter-answers. What we need is facts, transparency and accountability, not distractions.

The Minority stands with its Leader and the leadership and we will continue to insist that these matters are properly addressed in the interest of Ghana.
