Twenty-six (26) women trade groups from the Ashanti, Bono, and Ahafo Regions have urged Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to choose a woman as his running mate.
The groups want him to follow the example of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and choose a woman.
The argument is that selecting a woman will lead to increased female representation in Ghana’s governance structures.
The traders also noted that the move will encourage more women’s participation in the country’s political space.
The groups warned they would not vote for the NPP should the Vice President fail to respond to their call.
Some of them said that they have never voted for the NDC before but will do so if the NPP settles on a man as a running mate.
They bemoaned the underrepresentation of women in the country’s governance structure and political scene.
The women trade groups emphasize the importance of gender equality in political leadership for women’s empowerment and national development.
On April 12, 2024, they addressed the media at the Racecourse Market, emphasizing the positive impact of women in leadership positions, serving as a beacon of hope for young women, and promoting gender inclusivity in politics.
”We urge Dr. Bawumia to choose a female running mate. A female vice president will advocate for the well-being of Ghanaian women and guarantee that our interests are represented in all aspects of life. Women possess the necessary abilities, competencies, and expertise to lead the economy. With a woman as a running partner, she would defend our interests. We seek a woman who is knowledgeable, dedicated, caring, and, most importantly, someone who will advocate for women’s emancipation.
“The NDC has chosen a woman; therefore, the NPP should do the same. We have what it takes. When the men are selected, they do nothing. Let us pick on a woman so we can see the effect.”
