The Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, says Ghana chalked a remarkable decrease in the mortality rate among children to around 32% nationwide in 2024.
He attributed the decrease to a comprehensive health intervention implemented by the Ghana Health Service.
The intervention includes vaccination campaigns and counselling services, among other initiatives.
He disclosed this at the launch of the 2024 African Vaccination and Child Health Promotion Week on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at the Best Western Premier Hotel in Accra.
The event was under the theme “Healthy Childhood: Invest In Your Child for a Better Future”.
“The Ghana Health Service and its partners have been providing a comprehensive health package for children, including vaccination and close monitoring. These efforts have yielded significant results in reducing morbidity and mortality among children.
“Currently, the infant mortality rate in Ghana was 28 deaths per 1000 births in 2022. We have seen a 32% decline in 2024, and immunisation has played a critical role in this achievement among other factors,” he stated
