The Ghana Police Service has filed an injunction application at the High Court against the organisers of the ‘#DumsorMustStop’ vigil.
The Accra Regional Police Commander filed the application following refusal by the organizers to change the route for the demsontration.
The demonstration is being championed by Ghanaian actress and entrepreneur Yvonne Nelson.
The demonstration is scheduled for Saturday, May 25, 2024.
This is to protest over the recent power outages, popularly known as dumsors.
The actress said the ongoing power crisis is affecting businesses.
This would be the second time the actress has organised such a demonstration.
The first one was organised under former President John Dramani Mahama over the same issue in 2015.
The organisers for the second edition met with the police to finalise the preparations for the exercise.
The police at the meeting asked them to change the route for the demonstration, indicating that the proposed endpoint is close to the Jubilee House, which is a security zone.
The police also raised concerns about the intent to end the protest at midnight.
However, the protest organisers disagreed, stating that the endpoint was far from the Jubilee House and that there were no concerns with the event’s conclusion time.
The police then filed an injunction application at the High Court, seeking to stop the demonstration from being held.
The case has been scheduled for a hearing on May 24, 2024.
