The Medical Director of the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital has been temporarily suspended.
The director has been suspended pending an investigation by a committee established by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) into the alleged abandonment of a patient in a bush at Gomoa Ojobi in the Central Region.
The incident sparked outrage among Ghanaians after an elderly woman who was involved in an accident was allegedly abandoned by the Winneba Government Hospital at the roadside, leading to her death.
Details emerging indicate that the woman was part of a group of patients taken to the Winneba Government Hospital after a vehicle accident on the Gomoa Ojobi road.
The patient was in critical condition and had suffered head injuries that made her scream at night, disturbing other patients and staff.
Despite her condition, the hospital authorities allegedly ejected her from the hospital and abandoned her in a bush along the Gomoa Ojobi road.
The patient was left without any medical assistance or support and died a week later.
A statement issued by the GHS’ Director-General, Patrick Kuma-Aboagye in a letter updating the Minister of Health on the matter revealed that the temporal suspension of the director is “to ensure credibility and unfettered access to all relevant information, the Medical Director has temporarily been relieved of his post pending the outcome of the investigation.”
Accoridng to him, the appropriate action would be taken at the end of the enquiry to ensure that any persons connected with the unfortunate incident were brought to book.
