The Ghana Electronics and Musical Instruments Dealers Association (GEMIDA) has expressed concerns regarding the authorities’ decision to close their shops due to the ongoing fire incident affecting some shops in Zongo Lane.
Noble Kwesi Arthur, the organiser of the association, observes that the decision has negatively impacted members with shops located in the area.
He lamented that they have not been allowed to open their shops for almost a week, and that has had a serious financial burden on them.
Speaking in an interview with Rainbowradioonline.com, he stated the barriers that have been mounted at the Zongo lane area are affecting their business.
”We respectfully request that the Fire Service and Police Service consider removing or adjusting the barriers to enable our customers to access our trading area. The barriers have been in place for almost a week, and we were not consulted prior to their installation, although we did engage with the authorities on Wednesday to discuss this matter.”
They informed us that they mounted the barriers because they wanted free movement of their vehicles and also because of the smoke from the fire. ‘’
Mr. Kwesi Arthur commended the Fire Service and their dedication but stressed the need for them to pave the way for them to open their shops.
”Our members were unaffected by the outbreak; however, the shop closures are adversely impacting our business operations. We urge the authorities to reconsider their decision and permit us to resume trading. The issue of smoke was raised, but it does not significantly affect our area, prompting our appeal to allow business to continue. Our members have financial obligations, including loan repayments and family support, making a week-long closure a significant hardship.”
