A research fellow at the Centre for Public Opinion and Awareness (CenPOA), Kamal Alhassan, has predicted that there is a very high possibility of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) rejecting the outcome of the elections if it does not go in their favour.
The cyber security expert stated that the opposition party has raised several issues they have with the voters’s register and the entire electoral process, which the Electoral Commission claimed to have addressed.
He said that should the party win the elections, it would have no challenge with the declaration, but they will certainly challenge the results should it go in the favour of their main opponent, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He argued that there is a very high possibility for the results to be challenged considering the posturing of the opposition.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said the NDC has gone further to organise a nationwide demonstration against the Electoral Commission.
Using a football match as an example, he said even before the match starts, someone is raising concerns, and if these concerns are not addressed, they would certainly challenge the results.
He has therefore asked the EC to meet the NDC halfway through the issues and exhibit some level of commitment in order to engender trust, credibility, and accountability.
”There’s a high possibility of doubting the election outcome due to the opposition’s posturing, including a nationwide demonstration against the Electoral Commission. If concerns are raised beforehand and left unaddressed, the opposition can later claim the election was tainted if it doesn’t go in their favour.
If the Electoral Commission demonstrates genuine concern, goodwill, and a commitment to ensuring a free, fair, and transparent election and takes tangible steps to guarantee the credibility of the voter register, rather than merely issuing vague correspondence to the NDC, a compromise may be achievable through mutual cooperation.”
