Majority petitions Speaker to recall Parliament for consideration of urgent matters

October 23, 2024
Majority

Second Deputy Majority Chief Whip, Alex Tetteh Djornobuah, has petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to recall the House so the MPs can attend to urgent matters.

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, suspended sitting ‘sine die’ while refusing to comment on the ex-parte motion served on him regarding the decision by the Supreme Court to reverse his declaration of four seats vacant.

The Speaker suspended the House indefinitely on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, while indicating that the House had the quorum to conduct business but was unable to take decisions.

But the Second Deputy Majority Chief Whip in his petition referenced Article 112(3) of the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana and Standing Order 53 of Parliament.

In providing the context and justification for his petition, the Second Deputy Majority Chief Whip said, ‘’As Mr Speaker may recall, Parliament had adjourned sine die on Tuesday, 22 October, 2024, without any explanation to the circumstances leading to the adjournment. You may also recall that at conclave, you confirmed the service of a Supreme Court order, which was explicit.

At the time, the above stated items had been advertised and scheduled to be carried.
We wish to emphasise that this request is made in utmost good faith and in the national interest to enable the government to discharge its constitutional and democratic obligations to the people of Ghana. The matters outlined herein are of pressing importance and require the urgent attention of Parliament.’’
