NPP will be in the Majority come 2028 – Majority leader declares

December 16, 2024

Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has expressed confidence that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will regain the Majority in the 2028 general elections, following their defeat in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Speaking on the floor of the House on Monday, December 16, he drew parallels with the 1996 election, where the NPP was in the Minority but went on to form the Majority in the 2000 elections.

Similarly, in 2012, the NPP was in the minority but formed the majority in 2016. Therefore, he stated, “I am optimistic that come 2028, the NPP will be in the Majority.”

Addressing the plenary when the House resumed on Monday, December 16, 2024, the majority leader stated that the next minority caucus will demand from the president-elect to deliver on his promises, including running a lean government with not more than 60 minutes.

He said the ‘nkoko nkiti’ is a good social intervention policy, but they are waiting to see where the incoming government will get the resources to implement its policies, especially when it has promised to scrap several taxes.

He conceded that clearly this is the time for them to reflect while going into opposition, adding that no party can have a perfect government, and when you get into government, while you are happy to run your policies, you are likely to make mistakes.

‘’We concede that some mistakes were made. We concede that we couldn’t have done everything perfectly. The people have spoken, and we have accepted. But Mr. Speaker, the coming days and years will reveal the true colours of this umbrella, and the elephant will be watching keenly in this chamber. Mr. Speaker, this house looks forward to a leadership that will keep us going and keep the lights on in this chamber,’’ he posited.
