The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has maintained that its mandate is to organise elections and not to select Members of Parliament (MPs) or the President.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairperson of the EC in charge of Corporate Affairs, reiterated that Ghanaian voters are the ones who elect their preferred leaders and not the EC.
The EC has come under heavy criticism following the organisation of the 2024 ge etsl elections.
Some nine constituencies became the subject of disagreements from the two major parties, the NDC and NPP.
The EC re-collated the results of seven out of the nine constituencies last Saturday following a court order.
All of the seven constituencies were declared in favour of the New Patriotic Party.
The constituencies are Okaikwei Central, Nsawam Adoagyiri, Ahafo Ano North, Ahafo Ano South West, Obuasi East, Tema Central, and Techiman South. Results for Dome Kwabenya and Ablekuma North remain unresolved.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected the EC’s declarations, describing it as unlawful.
But Dr. Bossman Asare has maintained that contrary to claims that they have drugged the process, it was not their responsibility to make someone a president of the MP for a constituency.
“The commission has always maintained that it is not the responsibility of the commission to make someone the president or MP. That is the sole responsibility of the people of Ghana and the commission will ensure that the will of the people as expressed at the polling stations is reflected at all times,” Dr. Asare stated.
He added that “We are hopeful that the two outstanding constituencies will have their MPs-elect very, very soon, way before the swearing-in Parliament,” he added.
