The new National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has concluded an emergency meeting with stakeholders from the country’s energy sector as part of efforts to resolve a possible energy crisis.

Speaking to journalists, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Special Aide to the President and MP for Abura Asebu-Kwamankese Constituency, disclosed that the government has received reports on the sector’s challenges and will implement measures to address the crisis.

Details emerging suggest that the government will need to raise $89.90 million to purchase liquid fuel in the absence of natural gas.

The amount is required to ensure that electricity generation companies in the country produce enough power for consumption.

The West Africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAPco), which supplies natural gas to Ghana, is scheduled to conduct major maintenance work known as pigging, and will be unable to supply gas for nearly a month.

According to a statement issued by Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), WAGP’s maintenance of gas pipelines from Nigeria to Ghana was originally scheduled for October 2024.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu responded, stating that the new government will address the issue and prevent any type of crisis in the sector.

However, the previous government postponed the maintenance until January 2025.

He revealed that a technical committee has been formed to immediately design a roadmap by the end of today, Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

“A technical committee has been set up with representatives from all key players in the management of Ghana’s energy sector. They have until the end of today [Wednesday, January 8] to present the roadmap to the government, outlining what needs to be done and how it can be done.’’

“You can rest assured that the government is taking the matter seriously, and we will take the necessary actions to prevent any difficulties for the people of Ghana.”
