The Minority Member of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency, is vehemently contesting the Speaker’s characterization of his caucus as the “micro minority”.
Afenyo-Markin stresses that the rules of the house only acknowledge the minority and majority, rendering the term “micro minority” untenable.
The leader asserted that they serve as the conscience of the house and have consistently demonstrated their commitment to democratic principles.
He highlights the irony that 61 members of the majority caucus are absent, yet they are being described as the “micro minority.”
In his remarks delivered on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, he posited that the rules of the House only recognise the majority and minority without the mention of micro-minorities.
‘’Mr. Speaker, we do not have any micro minority. Mr. Speaker, the minority caucus hereby protests the description given to us, he stated.
He went on to state that ’Mr. Speaker, we find this unacceptable. Mr. Speaker, we condemned the minority’s seconded proposal and motion for your election. Mr. Speaker, when the so-called majority was conspiring against you, we protested; we stopped them from that conspiracy. It was us, the minority of conscience. This minority is the coincidence of this House. We don’t accept the description of micro minority. We are a minority. Simpliciter. Kindly Mr. Speaker, describe us as such. We are a minority. We are not a micro minority.
The Speaker, Alban Bagbin, reacting to this concern raised, said going forward, the term micro minority should not be used in the House again since the minority did not take it kindly.
‘’I know the term I used was not taken kindly by the Minority caucus, and so I acknowledge that, and I decided that it will not be used officially.’’
