A criminologist and lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Jones Opoku-Ware has opined that it would be more prudent and wise to maintain Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
He averred that if not for power play and political manipulation, Dr. Dampare should be maintained for his diligence, competence, and dedication to his constitutional duties.
Speaking to host Kwabena Agyapong on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said Ghanaians can attest to the quality of work done by the IGP.
He advised President John Dramani Mahama to retain the IGP, saying,’If President Mahama is so minded, he should keep IGP Dampare. In terms of the reforms championed by the IGP, he is made the police gained some respect and credibility. In fact, for some time, I have studied the data, and I see a consistent drop in certain crimes. Ghanaians are more confident in the police in dealing with criminal activities. It’s a new reform he has rolled out in achieving this goal. The way he carries himself and delivers on his mandate is good.
If not for politics, he is somebody who should be allowed to continue working to carry out his reforms for the police until it was officially time for him to retire. But in Ghana, a new government would always want to make changes. But my concern is that the IGP has done exceptionally well and should be allowed to continue with his reforms.
He added,’I will appeal to President Mahama to consider and retain Dampare as IGP because he has demonstrated competence and dedication. In my personal point of view and perspective, Dr. Dampare should be maintained for the quality of work he has done for the police service”.
