Nai Ampim Darko, Kyidomhene of Awutu State, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for the recent meeting he held with the National House of Chiefs.
He stated that the meeting was crucial since it afforded the President and the National of Chiefs dialogue on chieftaincy and national development issues.
The traditional ruler noted that prior to the elections, the president called on chiefs and outlined his vision to them, and for him to engage them after he was sworn in demonstrates leadership and his commitment to delivering on his assurances and promises.
President John Dramani Mahama met with the steering committee of the National House of Chiefs to discuss pressing issues affecting traditional governance in Ghana.
The meeting allowed him and the committee to discuss the need for constitutional reforms, strengthen traditional governance structures, and improve collaboration between the government and traditional authorities.
One other key issue discussed was the role of chiefs in maintaining peace and order in their communities.
Nai Ampim Darko, reacting to the meeting, commended the president, describing the meeting as prudent.
“I would want to commend President John Dramani Mahama for meeting the leadership of the National House of Chiefs. Chiefs are agents of development. We are the custodians of lands in their respective traditional areas and cannot be excluded from issues of national development. You will recall that the President himself acknowledged that while campaigning, he engaged with the chiefs and made some pledges and promises, and so after winning, he saw it prudent to meet us.
The meeting was a step in the right direction. Several issues were discussed both in public and behind closed doors,” he said while speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM.
He stated that chiefs are prepared to support President John Dramani Mahama in dealing with key concerns such as chieftaincy disputes, which have become national security concerns.
He also pledged the support of the chiefs towards plans to review the constitution.
“If there were to be a constitutional review, then the President should recognise the key role of Chiefs. We are the custodians of our lands, and we know the challenges we face. We need the support of the central government, but you cannot rule out the role of chiefs in developing the country. If the constitutional review will work, the suggestions of chiefs would have to be factored,” he added.
