The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has launched a massive enforcement exercise, demolishing the notorious Bayakasua slum located behind the COCOBOD building to restore sanity and security to the metropolis.
Led by the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Hon. Richard Kwasi Ofori Boadi Agyemang, the dawn operation commenced at exactly 6:30 a.m. and resulted in the flattening of approximately 500 unauthorised wooden structures.
The exercise received heavy security backing from personnel of the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, and Metro Guards. Officials from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Ghana Water Limited were also on-site to address rampant utility theft.
For years, the Bayakasua settlement has been a notorious haven for criminal syndicates, drawing public outcry over widespread prostitution, robbery, the sale and abuse of illicit drugs, and illegal utility connections.
During the crackdown, ECG officials successfully retrieved about 100 illegally connected electricity meters, while Ghana Water Limited disconnected multiple illegal water joints and repaired pipelines damaged by the squatters.
Despite the scale of the demolition, the operation was entirely peaceful, recording no casualties or resistance from the displaced occupants.
The KMA has reiterated its unwavering commitment to reclaiming public lands, enforcing strict planning regulations, protecting vital infrastructure, and improving environmental sanitation to ensure a safer and cleaner Kumasi for all residents.
