Minister-designate for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, says unemployment is a national security threat.
He stated that the existence of vigilante groups can be dealt with by creating job opportunities for the youth, especially those involved with the vigilante groups.
He posited that currently, the mid-population who are not in employment, not in training, and not in education are about 12% of the non-working population.p
This he lamented is a danger because those were the group of people anybody could fall on to engage in lawlessness of acts of violence.
He said if these individuals are employed, nobody can fall on them as a gun for hire, but without any form of employment, they will easily fall to such hires.
He has therefore promised to collaborate with all the relevant agencies on the best ways to train these groups of people, reset their minds, and create better opportunities for them.
He stressed that we need to constantly engage that group because they are a national security threat.
I am going to work with all the relevant agencies so that we train them, look for opportunities for them, and formalise some of the things they do so that we can get out of some of these cankers.”
He was responding to a question on how to deal with post-election-related violence.
