An executive member of the Ghana Used Clothing Dealers Association, Aikins Mensah, says the GHC 1 million they received from President John Dramani Mahama has been distributed.
He stated that the money was shared among 7,900 affected persons in the recent fire outbreak that destroyed the market.
The executive member, speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, disclosed that each person received GHC 125.
He told host Kwabena Agyapong that the original idea was to use the amount for something substantial, but the traders demanded that the money be shared among them.
He also noted that the President demanded that the money be shared among the affected traders, and so they did as instructed.
Mr. Aikins said that some had suggested that the amount be used to purchase a waste collector, but because the President demanded that the amount be distributed to the traders, they did as required.
“The GHC 1 million sounds huge, but we shared it among 7,900 affected traders. We shared the amount last week Friday. Each affected trader received GHC 125. The President insisted that we share the amount. There was an amount of GHC 12,500 left. This amount would be kept so that when other affected traders come around demanding that they did not receive any amount, we will give it to them.”
