The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has proposed the establishment of a dedicated emergency fund aimed at addressing fire outbreaks, rainstorms and other unforeseen disasters in our senior high schools.
The minister explained that this dedicated fund will be solely allocated for the swift reconstruction of school facilities that suffer damage from rainstorms, fire outbreaks, or other disasters.
He disclosed this when he visited the Labone Senior High School, where a fire outbreak destroyed three out of six dormitories on Sunday, March 16, 2025.
Speaking to journalists, he said, “I can’t put a number to the amount of money needed for renovations, but be assured that Labone Secondary School and Northern School of Business in Tamale and a school in Akrokere in the Ashanti region, which was also hit by a rainstorm, will benefit from our emergency intervention.
“But what this wakes me up to is that the government must have a dedicated emergency fund under the Ghana Education Service budget to be able to respond timeously to some of these unpredictable natural and human occurrences.”
Meanwhile, he has announced that the government will provide students with temporary accomodation while the damaged dormitories are renovated.
He also revealed if the budget allocated for his ministry allows, the government will construct a new dormitory for the school.
“I have asked a team to come over now and do an assessment. We will get them located (to a temporary facility), and work should commence. If my budget allows me to be able to start the construction for a new female dormitory, we will do so for the Labone Secondary School.”
