Anthony Oppong, President of the Ghana Union of Traders, Kumasi branch, has attributed the fire outbreak that destroyed several shops at Adum in the central business district to power outages.
He said although the Ghana National Fire Service had yet to disclose the cause of the outbreak, they could attribute it to the power outages.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he decried the recent power outages popularly known as ‘dumsor’.
A fire outbreak last week destroyed several shops and properties in Adum, located in the heart of the Central Business District of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
The outbreak, which started in the early hours of Friday [March 21] morning, spread rapidly to other shops, causing significant losses for traders and shop owners.
Mr. Oppong stated that the fire caused significant damages, and because the majority of items sold there were highly inflammable, the fire managed to destroy items worth several million Ghana cedis.
‘’The GNFS has not disclosed the cause of the fire, but from our perspective as traders, we know that ‘dumsor dumsor’ caused the outbreak. On Friday, we witnessed continuous outages.
The outages were alarming because at almost every ten minutes, the lights were off, so we will conclude that it was due to the ‘dumsor dumsor’. Approximately 500 persons have been affected,’’ he added.
