The Ghana National Cocoa Farmers Association has served notice that they will have no other option than to sell their lands to illegal miners or smuggle cocoa to other neighbouring countries should the government fail to increase the price for cocoa.
President of the association, Mr Anane Boateng, said cocoa farmers have been cheated and taken for granted for so long, and they will no longer entertain that.
He noted that as farmers they mobilised against the previous government because it failed to address their concerns, and the same will apply to the current government should the government fail to increase cocoa prices.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said,’’The previous government cheated us and failed to address our concerns. So we mobilised and voted them out. The same will apply to this government should they also fail to deliver on their campaign promises. If they fail to increase the price, cocoa farmers will sell their lands to illegal miners or smuggle the cocoa to other countries.’’
Mr Anane Boateng stated that Ghanaian farmers are more concerned because they are constantly accused of smuggling cocoa to other countries, while authorities have failed to address the root causes.
He insisted that the government raise cocoa prices regardless of the challenge.
He went on to say that if there was a problem, the government should involve them so that they could discuss the best solutions.
