The founder of the Buz Stop Boys, Kwadwo Safo, says one of the major things that they are praying for is mindset transformation on the part of the Ghanaian public.
The civil engineer who formed the group in July 2023 with just five people stated that mindset transformation would help deal with the filth and insanitary conditions across the country.
Appearing on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he indicated that although their volunteerism has resonated with people,. There was still the need for a positive mindset.
He told host Kwabena Agyepong that the group was started through volunteerism, with the members dedicating themselves to see Ghana clean without any desire for any monetary benefits.
He said the initiative focuses on cleaning heavily trafficked areas, creating a cleaner and more welcoming environment for both residents and visitors.
Kwadwo Safo stated that they have also started raising awareness among younger children so they will see the need to be environmentally conscious.
He said the idea is to raise the next generation of volunteers so that more young persons or volunteers will start focusing on their various communities.
“We are praying we will get to the point where community members will dedicate themselves to participating in voluntary clean-up exercises. In five or ten years, if we have more of such groups, there would be no point in going, let’s say, to Alajo, because we will already have those who are volunteers in that community to clean there.”
On his part, Vice Lead of the group James Safo noted that “our biggest challenge is about the mindset of the individuals, and we need a positive mindset about sanitation. This is precisely why we have decided to raise awareness among children, as it is our desire that in ten years to come, Ghana will become one of the cleanest countries in the world. We are hopeful about this because if we raise awareness among children and they grow, they will have an understanding of a clean environment.”
