Christian Kwabena Andrews, founder and leader of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), has claimed that suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo is not above the law.
The politician and preacher asserted that she must answer for any wrongdoing and if it was established that she is capable.
He was, however, quick to add that in the event that she is exonerated, under no circumstances can anyone force her out of office, including President John Dramani Mahama, since that will amount to constitutional breaches.
Popularly known as Osofo Kyiri Abosom, the 2024 presidential candidate for GUM, said the president has not breached any law so far in the processes involved towards the removal of the chief justice.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Osofo Kyiri Abosom said the president has acted in accordance with the law right from when the petitions against the chief justice were filed up until a prima facie was established, a committee was set up to prove her, and the suspicion from office.
He described the ‘Save the Judiciary’ demonstration as a needless partisan political exercise with the actors having personal and parochial interests and not the national interest.
”The demonstration was pointless. The NPP served as both the exercise’s foundation and financier. All other parties were asked to submit budgets in order to participate. They were only required to take part in the demonstration and make unnecessary noise. The political parties took part for financial and selfish reasons. These parties have no desire to see Ghana develop. They created these parties to make money. These parties move from place to place in order to make money.”
The Chief Justice is being investigated, and if found guilty of any wrongdoing, will face punishment. However, if she is exonerated, I do not believe the president can remove her at any cost because that would constitute a violation of the law. President Mahama has not breached the law in this matter, rendering the demonstration unnecessary.”
