The lifeless body of six-year-old Sylvester Owusu, affectionately known as Sly, was discovered on Monday morning in the River Offin at Denkyira Buabinso, located in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality of the Central Region.
According to reports, the young boy tragically drowned on Saturday evening, following a downpour that occurred around 3 PM in Dunkwa.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the minor was en route from his grandmother’s residence when the incident happened.
It is believed that upon reaching a particular spot, he slipped and fell into a flooded gutter, which subsequently swept him away through the Anikoko River and finally into the River Offin.
Sly, a young boy who was returning home from his grandmother’s food vending spot at the Dunkwa Zongo market, had been the subject of a search operation.
A team had been searching for him in both the Anikoko and Offin rivers from Saturday night but was unsuccessful until Monday morning.
Following an expanded search effort and announcement, the body was eventually found in the River Offin.
The Ghana Police Service and the Dunkwa government hospital collaborated to release the body to the family, who then proceeded to bury the remains at the Dunkwa Mfuom cemetery.
Hon. Yaw Ayensu, the Assembly member for the Aggrey Road electoral area, expressed his condolences to the media, stating that the incident has left the family devastated.
According to Hon. Ayensu, the young boy had been waiting at his grandmother’s place for the rain to subside before heading home.
After the rain had stopped, the grandmother gave him Ghc5 and instructed him to return home, but unfortunately, he met his untimely demise.
