President’s comments on indiscipline in schools are apt, but the MoE and GES must act – PRETAG

The Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana has commended President John Dramani Mahama for expressing deep concern over the growing trend of indiscipline in senior high schools across the country.

Communications Director Kingsley Anyimadu says this demonstrates the government’s commitment to dealing with the matter.

However, he is worried that the Ministry of Education has not responded to their letter regarding the spate of indiscipline in secondary schools.

He has therefore called on the Ministry and the Ghana Education Service to collaborate with them and other stakeholders to find lasting solutions to the issue.

The association commends the president for expressing concern but awaits a response from the Ministry of Education and the Director General of the Ghana Education Service, to whom they addressed their letter.

Kingsley Anyimadu stated that while the president’s comments are appreciated, the sector minister and the Ghana Education Service have the primary responsibility for addressing the matter.

“We commend the President for expressing deep concern over the matter. However, we are yet to hear from the Ministry of Education and the Director General of the Ghana Education Service. We addressed a letter to them and are still awaiting a response. We want them to collaborate with us so we can find lasting solutions to the matter. It is good that the President commented, but the sector minister and the GES have the responsibility of dealing with the matter. We don’t have the capacity to go to the Jubilee House and engage with the President, but we can do so with the Ministry and the GES on the matter, and so we are waiting for them to take action.”

The National Association of Graduate Teachers and other teacher unions have given the government an ultimatum to address the situation by the end of the month or face protective action from teachers against violent students.

Although President Mahama recently emphasised the need for collective action during a meeting with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Kingsley Anyimadu insists that the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service must engage with them to determine the best way forward.
